Gender: Female
Race/Species: Human (Chinese and Japanese)
Age: 17
Height: 5'6"
Occupation: Demon Hunter
Alignment: Lawful Good
Appearance
Normally Niu’s hair would be a mix of black and red, but the continuous application of purifying magic on herself would end up bleaching her hair white. Her irises are a light pink color. Her chin is an oblong V shape, with tall cheekbones. She has a less prominent brow, and an average nose. She is roughly half Chinese half japanese, similar to Liena. Her figure is athletic but condensed into a relatively tight physique, that reveals little of her actual strength.
Backstory
I could almost paint the picture of that night. I remember everything, from the blue tint of the walls underlying the blood splattered across them. I remember the sharp cry of the cicadas outside, the scent of the spring blossoms that had leaked through the torn windows. I could picture the shreds of fabric caught up in the scarred tissues of the floor and sidings, the way the shattered window fragments reflected the moonlight, everything. I remember hearing the guttural voice of my mother, as if she was still crying out for help. I suppose I didn’t understand then, the sounds a corpse makes after death, but I responded nonetheless. ‘I’ll help you mommy,’ I said, as I ran for the phone. I even remember the gentle tone of the emergency response operator, as they tried to console me.
Somehow, regardless of what I try. I still can’t picture the face of the creature who caused it, nor can I reason why it spared me.
When Niu was about six years of age, her parents were murdered by a fiend. She discovered them late at night, and didn't remember much before the event. The traumatic experience has maintained strong residual influence on her behavior and worldview all the way into her late teens, and beyond. Not long after this, her latent abilities were discovered by her assigned guardians and she was transferred to the court of the yellow dragon, where she lived under his guidance, receiving education, guidance and training.
At around 12 years of age, Liena showed up, her nemesis, and best friend. They were polar opposites at every turn. Where Liena was sloppy, lazy, and impulsive, Niu was refined, competitive, and hard working. Where Liena listened to degenerate music like hardcore punk, Niu had developed a taste for a’ak and Gagaku. Where Liena ate raw oysters and duck blood soup, Niu preferred sashimi and kimchi. It was only once she came to understand her better that her detestation would die off a little. The experience was actually important for her, as Liena and Huáng Lóng helped her to be less anxious and to opt for a healthier lifestyle, less characterized by controlled behavior.
At this time, Niu was pursuing more rigorous training and education to eventually be accepted into the high monastery. This goal of hers didn’t work out however, and she would end up taking up the practice of capturing and killing fiends instead. Her life involved running a research laboratory funded in part by Huáng lóng’s institution, focusing on individuals who’ve been possessed by demonic entities and lived for extensive periods of time, often with changed morphology of the body and mind. She’s practiced with diluted quantities of “grey” ether, that is, monadic or radiant ether that has been modified by cthonic elements. She’s been doing this in hopes of pursuing a cure of sorts, that is an etheric source that could remove the influence of a fiend without also killing the host. This research has been unsuccessful thus far. She spent her time capturing individuals like this, taking samples of their ether and other physical characteristics for additional research.
Her work would eventually lead her to become a representative for her local district and she was given license to found her own agency in supernatural affairs, all at the age of 16. In her spare time, she tries what she can to get her hands on the texts of the high monastery, or at least their public versions, reading through the different applications of ether that had been exploited by the old masters.
Personality
“You never think these things through Liena. What was your plan flying that aircraft? You’ve had no piloting experience in your life. You certainly didn’t check the fuel reserves before taking off on a half empty tank. You didn’t pay a single glance at the altimeter or the vertical speed indicator before yanking back the control column like a caveman, and launching us full throttle into the skies. We were almost ascending perpendicular to the ground before the engine blew out, and you just happened to find the eject lever milliseconds before we crashed into the ground. We almost died!”
Niu has a complicated relationship with death, having experienced it since childhood. Her existence is a confused duality manifested in the horrors of her past with the warmth of her friendships. She understands the fragility of life more than anything, and as such she is fiercely protective of those in her life she cherishes, including her legal guardians and her friend Liena. Her experiences with death have isolated her from others in the sense that she’s been made afraid to make new bonds with others due to the fear of losing them later on. This drives her to be more cold towards those she isn’t close to.
Her profession and methods often place her on the line between life and death, where one slip up could lead to catastrophic results. This has tempered her to be very meticulous, calculative, and rigid. From her own studies to her combat prowess, she strives for flawless accuracy and precision. Similarly she has an eye for weaknesses and flaws, though it’s rare that she points them out. Controlled and reserved, she prefers to execute things in a clean fashion, leaving behind little to no mess. Naturally she is also harsh on herself, often staying up into late hours of the night practicing techniques until she could execute them flawlessly.
The primary drawbacks of her lifestyle and worldview are her anxieties and fatigue. Because she is hard on herself and often high strung, she can also experience periods of exhaustion where she must rest for an extended period of time to replenish herself. The consequences of this have also manifested visually, with her white hair and pink eyes, denoting a sickly appearance in her youth. This was a direct result of her efforts to isolate and remove her flaws.
Physical Abilities
Niu possesses immense physical strength due to her lineage and strenuous training, able to perform incredible showings of strength considered impossible for most human beings, including lifting objects in the kilotonnes (or more), and leaping to vertical heights measured in kilometers. She is strongest in her back, but for little reason than the fact that it is usually exercised slightly more often than her other muscles. Her bone density is much higher than average, granting her weight and fortitude that allows her to counteract the force of objects she wouldn’t normally be able to do. Her strength, fortitude, weight, and excellent technique is all put on display when she wields her mace, which weighs around 50 kilograms. Her endurance is also well above average as a result of her training and the demanding nature of her work.
Qi and Magic
Niu is proficient in Dìqiú and fēng style, duplication, magnification, cloaking, barrier spells, and umbral ether.
Duplication and magnification are conjoined schools of magic that involve the use of ether to produce duplicates, or to increase a scalar value of a given object, such as its mass, volume, density, etc. Minor applications can involve duplicating smaller objects, and magnifying one or two of its qualities. These can usually be done with nothing more than a command. Certain higher scale spells of this nature would require a more involved command. Heavily involved spells such as self duplication, or planar magnification, would require a ritual.
Dìqiú style is the style of earth, and involves both the application of qi, and is its own fighting style. Practitioners of this craft are commonly thought of as extremely grounded, but this is purely false. In fact practitioners of the Diqiu style are extremely flexible, with techniques like earth step, allowing them to maintain balance anywhere where there is terrain. The ability to traverse through earth effortlessly, and to produce spikes of earth from great distances make them very sneaky, and the general principles surrounding the Dìqiú are less about representing the ideals of rock solid ground, and instead capitalizing on the possibilities one could achieve through geokinesis.
Dì
This is a little more than a baseline understanding of the earth style, one that was held by the ancient masters, who thought of this concept differently to how it is viewed today. They viewed earth as complementary to the heavens, the fundamental “ground.” The application of its most rudimentary form naturally yields wider interpretations.
Gēn
An ability that allows someone to find grounding anywhere. It is perhaps more complicated than the other techniques because it bears the requirement of distinction. For instance if a practitioner is thrown into a dimension without terrain, they would have to be able to distinguish the Dì in the area, which requires finding the dimension or plane’s poles. In planes where such things don’t exist, such as the Logoic plane, this technique is impossible.
The Fēng and Kōngqí styles concern wind and air. Naturally practitioners of this style are very nimble and slippery, but much of their abilities involve finding footholds and propulsion points midair, lessening their own weight, negating friction and the impacts of rapid velocity changes, nearly entirely. Because air is the most present medium within the world of Di, it quickly became the most coveted style. With users able to disperse attacks, maintain perfect balance at all times, set traps for their foes, and dish out devastating amounts of damage. Users of this style were notably at their most dangerous not out in the open, but in closed spaces.
Kōngqì
Air in the traditional sense is broken down into two distinct words meaning emptiness, and vitality, or essence. That is to say, the ancient masters didn’t just see air as it is seen today, but rather, saw it as an aspect of life itself and sought ways to expand on the limits of the Fēng school. They believed that to understand a body of qì, one needed to observe it for an extended period of time or they had to be exposed to it. With this, they came to understand microspheres and other concepts, applying them not just to themselves but to others as well.
Xiâo Qiútî
Each person has a micro sphere, even if it is nothing more than the small pocket of air surrounding them. In their studies, the masters came to unlock ways to utilize and maintain one’s microsphere, as an aspect of their qì. Mood, emotions, and physical health all feed into this space, even within those less sensitive to the forces governing life. An expert with this understanding can maintain their microsphere in the vacuum of space for extended periods of time, supplementing and preserving their physical health by drawing from the cosmos or their own qì. They can also nullify certain attacks that affect this space, namely fire.
Barriers
Niu can form barriers of three primary varieties. It includes, chromatic (repel), dark (absorb), and physical barriers.
Cloaking
Being a hunter, Niu is an expert in cloaking spells, able to disguise and camouflage etheric signatures, and give objects perfect transparency. Naturally the effectiveness is directly related to the amount of effort and time put into them.
Sniper's Pulse
An ability that allows Niu to borrow time by radically speeding up her own processes, usually to grant her time to make an accurate shot, if not several at a time. She will usually operate at a slower speed after using this ability, having to take some amount of time for her speed to return to normalcy.
Weapons and Wards
Her bow, Kǎ Fú, is a complex feat of engineering consisting of thin Dían steel and blue green ash, with Bai silk making up the drawstring. It’s primary characteristic was its draw weight, being in the tonnes. Her rapier Bù héxié, was forged in divine planes and bears the chaotic relationship between her own etheric source with Logoic ether. It is used primarily as a close ranged trump card of sorts against stronger fiends, as it's considered extremely effective against practitioners of umbral ether or nether. It causes etheric bodies to fragment apart and collapse. Lastly her mace weighs in at about 50 kilograms, with no other qualities other than its weight. It bears a model of the head of Qíng Lóng, and is forged of celestial steel.
Her shield, Tūnshì zhě, absorbs ether and augments itself according to what it absorbs. Its fortitude and defensive practicality increases the more energy it consumes. Of course, once it absorbs ether, that ether is purified and converted into the desired baseline component, removing any attached wills. At the same time, if the will is too strong to allow conversion, it will either dissipate or be deflected. She also has numerous wards, manifesting as tattoos along her body. These are referred to simply as Jǐngwèi, and were created and placed by the Wǔfāng Shàngdì (the five forms of the highest deity) where they serve to repel umbral ether and wills. This grants her powerful resistance against most psychic attacks, and by proxy, she naturally repels focused nether based attacks. She also can be seen wearing a mask with an attached wind spell that purifies the air. This is solely for her convenience however.
Arrows
Arrows are generally crafted out of a celestial or cthonic steel variant, to withstand the speeds by which they travel.
Frag Arrows
Simple and effective, they explode on contact with the target and shatter, sending out metallic fragments meant to render flesh.
Paralytic arrows
Used to subdue yaoguai, and fiends. It carries an incredibly deadly cocktail of toxins mixed into the tip, engineered to fragment upon contact with the target. The toxins vary from one another as a countermeasure for the hemo-diversity of her primary targets, demons, which often possess complex circulatory systems fortified over eons in response to poisons. The resulting cocktail she developed over years of experience, would end up being effective against most beings of the underworld, and by proxy being effective against most other life forms as well. A picoliter of it would outright kill the average human. Naturally the toxins attack the neurons of its targets, leading to paralysis and eventually death.
Feng arrows
Arrows with an etheric wind element to them, converting the space they travel through into a vacuum, usually composed of winds. They tend to strike with great ferocity, but the primary focus is establishing a vacuum between her and her targets, allowing for other arrows to be channeled through them with greater velocity and almost no frictional issues.
Blunt arrows
These take a separate approach to creating openings, composed of a dense cthonic metal alloy, the arrows have rounded tips and are more broad in their structure. Some variants of these may also be branded with a dense etheric signature, intended to manifest on impact, adding tremendous force to an already forceful object. If anything they function like cannonballs, but with higher speeds and potentially more devastating consequences.
Lightning arrows
Collaborating with her friend, Liena, she was able to form arrows with distinct lightning seals attached to them. The seals are infused with wave lightning, a form of current that directs the discharge chaotically through the bodies of it’s targets. The result is a form of lightning that translates more heat into its victims, evaporating their organs, vaporizing their bones, and sometimes turning them to carbon depending on the dosage.
Earth Arrows
Being a student of the Dìqiú school, she can impose this variant of qi onto her arrows. Arrows with this signature translate their momentum across terrain. Meaning if she were to fire an arrow into the ground, an attack would emerge at the given distance, consisting of rock, at the precise momentum. If she pinpoints the location before firing, the transformation occurs instantaneously. It only takes additional time if she decides to alter the direction or change the distance after firing.
Splitting arrows
Through the use of duplication, she can launch several arrows with a single draw, each containing the same essential properties of the other. The duplicates are composed of ether.
Barrier arrows
Arrows containing barrier spells. The spell could include physical barriers, dark barriers (absorptive), and chromatic barriers.
Kuò arrows
Powerful umbral arrows containing the Kuò curse. They insert an expansive influence into their target, causing the fabric of existence composing their being to stretch outwards, usually killing them in the process and forming a rift in space time.
Radiant arrows
Applied to most fiends, when it’s more important to kill than to subdue. These are essentially celestial arrows seen throughout history as a component of the arsenal used by heroes of the past to route the cthonic forces and the armies of the eight hells. They have an attached qi that exists as the combinatorial of the five forms of the highest deity, forged in the collaborative effort of the very gods governing her homeworld. The white light emanating from the arrows is set to represent a holy virtue, but in truth it is less that and more a manifestation of the purest form of qi, and has slightly different properties. It is most devastating against yaoguai and feinds, but is destructive to most beings, including those not compatible with the logoic plane of existence. Touching them would be enough to kill most people.
Cthonic arrows
Arrows laced with an umbral energy. As of yet, Dacia has been largely unsuccessful with yielding arrows equal in potency to her radiant arrows, as forging these naturally requires applying the life force of someone attuned with the cthonic forces governing the underworld. In capturing certain fiends, and extracting fractions of their souls, she has been able to produce some cthonic arrows. If used, they would have an umbral effect, which could lead to a myriad of different effects.
Nigen-sei
Most of her yield in her experiments with captive fiends would be found in the violent clash between the astral and umbral energies, colliding the two and forcing them together with a seal, has allowed her to create possibly the most destructive arrow in her arsenal as of yet. The opposing forces are released and annihilate each other upon impact, producing a destructive force at unquantifiable magnitudes.
Combinations
Anything readily available to her, including Diqiu style, feng style, duplication, etc, can be applied to most arrows. This can allow her to combine the certain effects into one. Splitting earth arrows would be a good example.
